Ask a Cop? Concerns with alcoholic brother in law…

QUESTION:

My brother-in-law has been incarcerated twice for drunk driving and naturally lost driving privileges. In 4 days his driving privileges will be reinstated but even after 2 rehab visits,  2 hospital stays for falls resulting from drinking, and job loss he continues to drink.

Our family is frightened by him resuming driving.  What if anything can we do?

ANSWER:

Since he is more than likely an adult, there is not much you can do. He needs to do it. If he does not seek the help he needs this will just be a revolving door of issues and arrests and loss of privileges. TO the point the judge will just take away his license and he will never be able to drive again.

I would suggest he seeks professional help to not only talk about the drinking issues but also to dive deeper into why he drinks and take care of the root cause and the effect. That or get family involved that can help him into recovery that he sticks with. Family can do all sorts of things that Law Enforcement cannot.

Good luck with this – I hope it works out positively.
