Ask a Cop?: Maternity Leave in Law Enforcement

“Because of the dangerousness of law enforcement, if a woman cop gets pregnant how far into the pregnancy until she is forced to go on leave? “

Obviously a pregnant woman would be able to work longer into a pregnancy at a desk job with no risk than as a patrol officer out on the street. Most departments I know of place a pregnant officer into a light duty position as soon as the pregnancy is disclosed to them. The officer is usually put into a position such as an  evidence clerk or a desk position taking phone and counter reports. Pregnant officers are not allowed to come into contact with suspects or be subjected to risky situations. The pregnant officers work the light duty position until they go out on maternity leave as they would a regular job. That way an officer isn’t forced to go on leave, the decision is between her and her doctor.

Hope that answers your question.
