Question:
Why do so many police officers mumble their name and which department they work for when making a traffic stop? I’ve watched multiple badge cam videos and noticed this trend. Is there a reason an officer would mumble or significantly speed up their speech when talking to a citizen? Sincerely curious. Thank you
Answer:
No reason, it is hard to know all cases without seeing them but overall when you say your name and ID (many departments do not require this as it is just another way to greet people) it gets repetitive. I never used to give that info before I knew who I was dealing with. Mine was normally – Good morning – afternoon etc – do you know why I pulled you over. – Then the citizen usually told me the truth and for me that was better because then at least I knew you were paying attention (most are not paying attention) – I would only let people off with a warning if they were aware of their actions and those actions did not greatly impact others. In some cases I was asked for it but it was normally only so they could give a compliment to my Sgt or Chief for assisting them or then actually having a good experience. I had two people over the course of my career actually thank me for arresting them.
The Name and Badge numbers / ID is always on the tickets and reports, so it is not something that usually is maliciously left out. Heck most departments require officers and deputies to wear a name plate.
Hope that helps.
