Ask a Cop?: Yielding the right of way

Question:

Hello,

Let’s say I’m at an intersection, turning left.

An officer, code 2 or 3, is approaching the intersection. My light turned green and I’ve already committed to going and I’m already halfway into my turn putting me in the middle of the intersection. Would it be smarter to complete my turn, or yield, even if I’m in the middle of the intersection?

Answer:

All cars should stop and yield to an emergency vehicle with lights and/or siren as long as it’s safe to do so. Emergency vehicles should slow when approaching a red light and go through safely when clear (all other cars stopped). If you are still moving trying to complete your turn they will not know your intentions. It would be safer for you to just stop and let the emergency vehicle pass, then complete your turn.
